If you’re in Sales, Marketing, CS, or RevOps, chances are you’ve heard the words “ChatGPT,” “RAG,” or “AI Agent” tossed around in meetings lately.
And if you’ve nodded along while secretly wondering, “What does any of this actually mean?” — you’re not alone.
Here’s a simple breakdown to help you get your bearings. 👇
Start with the Basics: AI Terminology & Tech Stack
Before diving into tools and automations, it helps to know the lingo.
What even is a large language model? How’s Claude different from ChatGPT? What do tools like Relevance, Sana, or n8n actually do?
There are a lot of AI tools out there right now — and more popping up every week. Getting a handle on the core terms and understanding what’s out there is the best place to start.
What is AI, Really?
AI (Artificial Intelligence) is just tech that mimics how humans think — things like learning, making decisions, and understanding language.
The version you’ve probably seen the most is Generative AI — it creates stuff. Text, images, code, audio. Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini all fall into this category.
They run on something called LLMs (large language models), which are trained on huge amounts of data — like books, websites, code, etc.— so they can:
Understand what you say
Figure out what you mean
Think through a response
And reply like a human would
Kind of like a super-smart intern who’s always available.
A prompt is just your message to the AI. But here’s the secret: how you phrase that message really matters.
Prompt engineering is the skill of giving clear, structured instructions to get better results from the AI. The more specific you are, the better the outcome.
Example:
“Summarize this customer complaint in 3 points and write a kind, professional response.”
That’s way better than “Fix this.”
Also, behind the scenes, AI tools usually have something called a pre-prompt — basically a hidden guide that tells the AI how to behave (be helpful, don’t guess, stay on brand, etc.).
Buzzwords You’ll Hear (That Actually Matter)
Let’s break down a few terms you’ve probably heard:
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): Combines a search tool with AI so it can pull real data (like help docs or CRM info) before answering. No more “AI hallucinations.”
MCP (Model Context Protocol): Think of this as the bridge that lets AI talk to other apps like Canva or Notion. It means you can ask, “Grab my Q2 visuals from Canva,” and it just… does it.
Agentic / AI Agents: This is when AI stops being just a tool and becomes a doer. AI Agents can complete tasks for you — like sending emails or updating records — without constant input. Like hiring a digital assistant that doesn’t sleep.
AI isn’t just hype — it’s already changing how GTM teams work. But to actually use it well, you need to understand the basics:
What AI is (and what it’s not)
How to talk to it (prompt engineering!)
What the tools are actually doing behind the scenes (like RAG, MCP, and AI agents)
You don’t need to become an AI expert overnight. Just learning the language and experimenting with a few tools can go a long way.
Next Steps
Here’s how you can take what you’ve learned and put it into action:
Try it out: Play around with tools like ChatGPT or Claude. Start with small tasks —summarizing an email, rewriting a LinkedIn post, or generating customer responses.
Practice prompts: Be specific, clear, and outcome-focused. You’ll be amazed how much better the results get.
